Why It's Better to Buy a Used Car Now, Rather than Wait

If you're thinking about buying a new car, Kelley Blue Book has some very important, dare we say urgent, advice. Buy now - don't wait!
This insight is in no way biased by Boardwalk Nissan. The fact of the matter is, KKB has insight into the industry that we simply do not. That is, prices on used-car models are currently lower than they've been earlier in 2011. Depending on how long you've been in the market for a used car, you might have noticed prices took a pretty steep hike when gas prices hit record highs and following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan and subsequent inventory shortages. Right now, however, used car buyers are enjoying the money-saving deals that come with low demand typical in the month of December. However, independent firm, KKB, warns that prices will not remain desirable for very long.
This alone might not come as earth-shattering news. Used-car prices do typically rise between one- and four percent in the first quarter. This year, however, forecasts put that already noticeable increase between two- and four percent higher. As Alec Gutierrez, Manager, Vehicle Valuation, KKB explains, "...Values may increase four to six percent."1
Circumstances spurring a more severe spike in used car prices nationwide January-March 2012 are, again, a matter of supply. Industry experts are projecting a potentially serious shortfall in used-car supply levels, thanks to low new-car sales two and three years ago. Yes, that was during the global economic crisis, the reverberations of which many people continue to feel today. Paltry sales during that unfortunate period are expected to translate into fewer trade-ins and lease returns. Hence, less-than-optimal used-car inventory levels.
The moral of the story is clear. If you want to get the best deal for a used car, your chances are significantly higher if you buy before the end of the year, rather than wait for 2012. The reason we're telling you this...Because, it's a simple market phenomenon every consumer should know. From our experience at Boardwalk Nissan, informed consumers are happier in the long-term.
